Smart Content Delivery
Faster Downloads, Quicker Connections, Steady Videos, and Very Reliable Managed Services

Having a flashy website is wonderful. But if it doesn't work as promised, you can lose customers, revenues, and time waiting for slow connections, jittery videos and unavailable Web servers.

Verio's Smart Content Delivery (SCD) was designed to prevent these unacceptable performance problems from arising. SCD delivers fast, reliable Web content, rich media and e-commerce transaction processing by marrying the cost benefits of a monitored, redundant, and shared architecture with the performance and stability of high-end carrier class equipment.

Our SCD technology's three components of Load Balancing, Global Server Load Balancing and Reverse Proxy Caching work together for faster connections, faster download times, steady video streams, and reliable managed services delivered across your Internet solution.

Why Verio Smart Content Delivery
  • To ensure your site performance is constantly maintained
    • SCD prevents problems from arising by delivering fast and reliable Web content, rich media and transaction processing
    • SCD leverages our highly reliable Global IP Network to create a content management, distribution and global server load balancing solution that improves performance while providing infrastructure-based cost savings
  • SCD eliminates bottlenecks inherent to the Internet since content is cached globally on multiple SCD servers that reside at the edge of the Internet and on top of a Layer 2/3 infrastructure
  • SCD Caching services -- available in data centers near Internet peering points -- allows Verio to deliver content to the majority of worldwide Internet destinations with superior quality
  • Verio constantly monitors a detailed set of health metrics for each SCD server so the optimal cache server for a user's request is always known
  • SCD substantially reduces the likelihood of overloaded Web servers and Internet delays by serving content from the most optimal SCD server, located much closer to end users
  • SCD provides Web site performance that is two to eight times faster, according to internal Verio research, because of our ability to off-load content from original servers
  • SCD solution manages and distributes rich media and static content to strengthen a company's brand with increased customer loyalty and greater satisfaction
Load Balancing
  • Shares traffic among multiple network-connected devices, such are firewalls, web servers, databases, or caches
  • Allocates load across a set of devices that perform the same functionality
  • Increases performance by distributing load
  • Allows customers to scale server architecture easily in order to keep up with growing traffic demands
  • Reduces single points of failure, resulting in higher-availability or "always-on" conditions
  • NTTA's Layer 4-7 switch-based server load balancing allows the most flexible options, greatly augmenting the level of complexity of these balancing algorithms
Global Server Load Balancing
  • Allows balancing end user load across multiple servers in geographically distributed data centers
  • In addition to standard load balancing algorithms, also allows the implementation of location based routing rules
    • For example, traffic can be routed to a particular data center based on the geographic location of the viewer, transit time for traffic between viewer and server, health of alternate servers, load, and a long list of other criteria
  • By utilizing GSLB across multiple data centers, site owners can improve their sites' performance by moving content closer to users, while gaining protection if an equipment failure or natural disaster disables one or more data centers
  • Customers are responsible for the synchronization of their Web content on their origin servers behind the load balancing solution
  • The SCD solution controls of basic cache and GSLB switch configuration, monitoring, and management
  • Alternatives to GSLB include:
    • Content Edge Servers (geographically distributed caches) which allow caching of Web content in remote data centers
    • Content Delivery Network (CDN) content can be distributed widely to the network edge on various caching servers, but these solutions cannot provide fault tolerance for the source server
Reverse-Proxy Caching
  • RPC increases origin site capacity by:
    • Reducing the cost of scaling Web server architecture
    • Offloading static HTTP content delivery duties from original servers, allowing them more capacity for dynamic content display and e-commerce transaction processing
    • Minimized the effects of flash crowds (sudden traffic increases) by scaling quickly
    • Decreases download time caused by busy origin servers
  • RPC also increases performance by:
    • Improving the performance of Web server content by storing the information on caches located near peering points
    • Improving the latency and quality of stored or live streaming video by processing it through specialized cache devices built to handle high numbers of connections and multiple streams which are located at peering points
    • Enhancing Web users' experience by delivering objects with greater speed and efficiency
    • Providing new ways to deliver rich, multimedia content to end users, increasing a Web site's return on investment
    • Extending the reach of one Web server throughout the world
  • Caches server location options include:
    • "Local Web Cache/Accelerator" -- caches located in the same data center as the origin server with most of the benefits in increased capacity provided to the entire implementation
    • "Content Edge Server" -- caches geographically separated from those servers that eliminates the need for extensive management to keep balanced servers' content in sync, and enabling improved performance by placing the content closer to the user's Web browser
